The Blackknife Returns
When I left Modulus Graphite in 2000, I officially launched Hoeg Guitars, carrying forward everything I’d learned about building world-class instruments. One of my first projects was the Blackknife — inspired by the iconic guitar Bobby Weir played in the ’80s. I called Bobby to make sure he was cool with it. His response? “Sure, go ahead.” I mentioned these wouldn’t have the graphite neck — instead, I’d be using mahogany with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard. Bobby just laughed and said, “They’ll probably sound better!”

Neck:
- Hundred year old Brazilian rosewood fingerboard 25 1/2” scale
- Graphite plate underneath the fingerboard for stiffness and even volume of notes
- Three piece neck through the body
- Two pieces of mahogany with 1/16” black veneer down center
- Double acting truss-rod and graphite faceplate with classic “KLD” (Thousand Ladies Dancing) pattern

- Brazilian Rosewood top and back
